Covid is So Small

This is a cell, blue, with Covid, yellow.

Compared to an entire cell, viruses are extremely small.  They are the evolution of relics from a time before life became cellular.  Pre-cellular life was all super-tiny.  Things like the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell were once free-floating organisms a thousand times smaller than a single cell.  Many of the organelles inside of living cells were independent organisms before cells.  That is one of the most interesting times in evolutionary history.  The first living cells came after millions of years of evolution leading to the parts that would eventually be incorporated into the first living cells.

Alien life is probably mostly on this scale, a scale we have yet to search for in any meaningful way.  Truly alien.
